Several hydraulic scale models in a woodland area.
The "Easter Scheldt" hall - right below - used
to investigate parts of the "DELTA PLAN".
There is a 20 feet difference of the water levels - top vs right -
controlled by dikes and locks.
The outskirts of Vollenhove "Old Land" is seen top left. See also one of my FS-images
A 15-20 minutes ride on my bicycle - since Aug 1st, 1967 - brings me to the so-called "New Land"

Hierbij doe ik, Abe Hoekstra (oud-medewerker van Het Waterloopkundig Laboratorium van 1966-1996),
een poging om een deel van de geschiedenis van het Waterloopkundig Laboratorium "De Voorst" in de Noordoostpolder vast te leggen.
Het Waterloopkundig Laboratorium heeft een deel van het Voorsterbos in gebruik gehad vanaf 1951 voor het doen van modelonderzoek
en heeft dit terrein verlaten in 1996. Dit deel van het bos is nu vooral bekend onder de naam Waterloopbos.

Op pad met "de Heer van de Waterweg"

In het Voorsterbos in de Noordoostpolder werden waterwerken uitgetest op schaal.
Tot de ingenieurs verdwenen, en de modellen overwoekerd raakten.
Langzaam maar zeker wordt het bos weer in ere hersteld. Kennislink ging kijken.

In 1996 verlieten de ingenieurs en medewerkers het Voorsterbos.
De nieuwe eigenaar was een projectontwikkelaar die er een bungalowpark van wilde maken.
Maar dat ging gelukkig niet door, vertelt Ton van der Meulen. In 2002 ging het bos, met behulp van geld van de Postcodeloterij,
over in handen van Natuurmonumenten. In 2005 ging het open voor publiek. Inmiddels staat het Waterloopbos op de voorlopige lijst
van Rijksmonumenten uit de opbouwperiode van 1959 tot 1965.
De definitieve plaatsing zal vermoedelijk dit jaar zijn beslag krijgen, denkt Van der Meulen.
En dan kunnen er eindelijk plannen gemaakt worden om de bouwwerken in het bos te restaureren.

Together with other assistants we did a lot of handwork in that time - a.k.a. "turven" of wave recordings
One of the known "turf" locations was in the assistants-room of the Wind-flume
Above recording is a "Jonswap" example of irregular waves, regular waves was more common in early days,
but the output on the "Sanborn or HP Chart recorder" was almost identical ;)

35 tests were done in a four year period, the duration of wave conditions was a total of 1381 hrs and 15 min
Soundings in mm were done along predefined lines, points were 20 cm apart (even 10 cm near waterline or critical areas)
Contour maps were made manual, difference charts and profiles were derived from these base maps
I had no computer on my desk that time, it was al done by hand !!!
Computer was likely used in a 2nd review for charts and profiles, but never for the soundings in this scale model

The outside scale models were vulnerable for weather circumstances and water quality ( leaves and dirt in canal water )
During wintertime all were flooded, so-called "winterpeil", to protect the concrete from frost damage
Over the years, the new measurement tool "micromolen" was more fragile as it's predecessor "ott-molen"
The water in most inside scale models was in a closed circuit (cc) with tap, filtered or ground water
red Kaliumpermanganat (KMnO4)/Potassium permanganate
and yellow fluorescent powder was used to determine intake, discharge, currents (fresh/salt) and other behaviours

Was for 9 weeks in Mill Bay at Marg's boarding house - one minute from ocean and Mill Bay Shopping Centre
Just the perfect spot, as I noticed this already in 1982 when I was there for 8 days ($5 per day instead of the average $25)
Did start (5 days) in Montreal were Marguerite's daughter Gaylene Wellman was living and working as waitress
In Sault Ste. Marie I ran into Scott Hurst and Dan Treichel from Green Bay, WI while on the Agawa Canyon Tour by train
Dryden, ON to Revelstoke, BC was done in one overnight bus ride (my longest Greyhound ride in hrs for this 2109 km)
In Coquitlam again with Allen & Martha McLaren for a short break
Maverick Coach Lines (or PCL) to Nanaimo on-board of BC-Ferries; towards Mill Bay I used my thumb for the last 70 km ;)
In those days there was less scheduled bus services on the Island as it is nowadays

Out of Boston I went by bus to Montreal to catch the Greyhound, I was forced due a strike to take the train to Mattawa
I hitch a ride of 186 km to Sudbury from where the bus schedule was running without problems
In Amberg, WI I met the townfolks while staying at Scott's cabin on the Pike River
Debbie, Mark, Wendy, Jack, Norma, Gordy, Dan, etc ... became long-time friends in that area
A couple of days later I took the bus out of Green Bay, WI to Duluth, MN while seeing rural Wisconsin
Overnight Greyhound bus ride of 1662 km - Duluth, MN to Medicine Hat, AB via Grand Forks, ND and Winnipeg, MB
Willem and Klaasje Santbergen from Vollenhove did visit their relatives in Medicine Hat, AB
Willem Santbergen was my colleague for several years on the Laboratory
Small world ;)
From 14 Jun 1988 till 25 Aug 1988 at Marg's place in Mill Bay, BC - Bas Kooijenga from Middelie was there too.
Drove together with Marg to Calgary in a small truck to supply daughter Gaylene with some furniture
we did stop twice in Salmon Arm / Enderby at Bill & Anita Murray née Wellman (Marg's older sister - b.1923)

I was one day with ir. Freek Verkerk and Peter Kluytenaar on the "Horizon" for trial manoeuvring and turning circle, etc ...
We left Emden (D) to a small test area on the North Sea near the Isle of Borkum
Buoys were placed identical as in Bermuda, so looking to the radar it was "Bermuda" for one day ;)

Floppy disks, initially as 8-inch (200 mm) media and later in 5¼-inch (133 mm) and 3½-inch (90 mm) sizes,
were a ubiquitous form of data storage and exchange from the mid-1970s into the mid-2000s.
By the late 2000s, computers were rarely manufactured with installed floppy disk drives;
3½-inch floppy disks can be used with an external USB floppy disk drive,
but USB drives for 5¼-inch, 8-inch, and non-standard diskettes are rare to non-existent.
These formats are usually handled by older equipment.

When it left Ramsden dock on her maiden trip by high tide, ir. Jan Onassis and myself were for about 6 miles on tug no. 1 (CAREFUL A227)
After 30 minutes the "sub" sailed by herself with 10 knots in the last section ( final buoy "Lightning Knoll" at 13870 m ) towards Argyll, Scotland
A total of four tugs were in use to keep the "cigar" on track in the narrow Walney/Piel Channel
Crew: 135 - Propulsion: 1 x Rolls-Royce PWR2 nuclear reactor, 2 x GEC turbines

I came across your website while searching out Vollenhove on the internet.
Being a Vollenhove resident, I was wondering if you could help me?
I am planning to visit Vollenhove on April 25th
to visit my uncle's war grave on behalf of my family.
I will be traveling from Canada.
My Uncle (Jack Gibbs) is buried in De Voorst cemetery, shot down at age 19.

This is 14 km WZW from Kavel N-33 (Marknesse) what was believed to be the crash location as determined
by BIDKL - Zwanenburg - on 29 Mar 1973, till my discovery of H-46 on 08 Nov 2018 in official papers
