023 O-668209 - 1st Lt. John T. Cravey Teunis, We're finding out a lot more about my uncle, the P-51 pilot John T. Cravey [picture 023], one of the men whose POW pictures you worked with Kurt Spence to identify and who thus appears on your web site. The two daughters of John Cravey - my first cousins - recently visited the little town of Ridnaun in northern Italy, where my uncle hiked after parachuting onto a glacier north of the town. Ridnaun was a mining town, and we've discovered that my uncle was sheltered in the miner's cafeteria before he became a POW. My cousins were even able to meet two people who, as children, saw my uncle in the town before he was turned over to the Germans. I now have the radio mast and wire from the P-51, and my cousin has the factory production plate, both recovered from the crash site on the glacier. I'm continuing to write the story - it may be a while before everything is finished, but I'll send it to you when it's ready. Also, almost two years ago, I sent you a manuscript by the B-24 pilot Ralph E. Kidd, in which he describes being shot down near the German/Netherlands border. To refresh your memory, his daughter Joyce Ellen Kidd found the manuscript in the attic just a few years ago - No one in their family knew that it existed. In his story, Ralph Kidd described a Canadian RAF pilot who was held prisoner with him, but who escaped. The RAF pilot, Bill Harvey, also wrote an account of how he was shot down and captured, and how he escaped across Holland. The manuscript is called "Spitfires, Krauts, and Hollanders", and I got very lucky and found the only copy for sale anywhere in the world. Harvey and a friend from his squadron self-published the manuscript in very limited numbers. Right now, I'm having a copy shop make a few additional copies of this original. If you've never read this, I'd be happy to mail you a copy - just send me your postal address.
