VN80 - BONS

My great-grandfather Johannes with his brother Jan Siemen (right) and his son Teunis Steven (left)
His 'nickname' was 'Hannes de Buter' - common in small communities
"BONS" , "BONSJE"or "BONSIEN" is the type of boat, registration number VN80
"Schuit", "Skuute" and "Skuutien" are also used for the "SCHOKKER", "BONS" or "BOL"
so it's a kind of confusing to find the right name
"VN" is the abbreviation for Vollenhove

All fishing-towns(villages) around the Zuiderzee did have their "abbrev-code"
following the most common I can recall at the moment

"UK" = Urk; "EB" = Elburg; "EH" = Enkhuizen; "HN" = Hoorn; "ID" = Ilpendam
"RD" = Durgerdam (county Ransdorp); "VD" = Volendam; "HK" = Harderwijk
"MK" = Marken; "WR" = Wieringen; "BU" = Spakenburg (county Bunschoten)
"KP" = Kampen; "GN" = Genemuiden; "ZS" = Zwartsluis; "KU" = Kuinre
"LE" = Lemmer; "ST" = Stavoren; "HL" = Hemelum-Laaksum; "TX" = Isle of Texel; "BIW" = Broek in Waterland

The "Punter" - small boat - Vollenhove, Kuinre, Kampen
The "Staverse Jol" - 6 to 8m - Staveren

The "Vollenhoofse Bol" - 7 to 10m - Vollenhove

The "Vollenhoofse-BOL or -Bolletje" is well-known in Vollenhove
It does have the characteristics of the "BOTTER" and the "BONS"
the draught was very small, so it was extremly suitable
when the shallow water was low due eastern-wind or what-ever
Most harbours on the east-bank of the Zuiderzee did have this problem
smaller boats then on the deeper west-bank was the solution
This scale-model is made by Klaas Vis - a superb piece of work!
Klaas, raised in "VENO" ( Vollenhove), does have a good knowledge and skill
to transform these different types of ships in splendid models

The "Schouw" - 8 to 10m - Hoorn

The "Pluut" - 8 to 12m - Harderwijk, Spakenburg

The VN15 was the only "Pluut" in the fleet of Vollenhove
"Siem van Aale" = Siemen Vis married with Aaltje Schuurman - (b.1875)
Image of this "Pluut" is original the VD23 - Volendam

The "Bons" - 9 to 12 m - Vollenhove, Elburg - related to the "Schokker"
A ship for shallow water, the "BONSIEN" did look like a "SCHOKKER"
but is was wider and smaller with a slender stern

The VN79 belongs of the grandfather "Harm de Doem" of Klaas
On a list of the year 1927 there are 79 "Schuiten" a.k.a. "BONSJES" further
17 Botters, 7 Aken, 2 Schouwen, 1 Pluut, 9 Punters and 20 Bollen
a total of 135

The "Botter" - 13.5 m -

The VN17 - botter - of Roelof Vis "de Gooier"
and the VN25 - bol - of Evert Spit "Evert Krul"
* inner-harbour of Vollenhove *

The "Lemster Aak" - 12 to 14m - Lemmer
The "Wieringer Aak" - 10 to 13m - Wieringen
The "Kwakken" - 17 to 18 m - Volendam
The "Schokker" - 18 m - Urk, Enkhuizen

left - VN110 - BOTTER - Simon Spit - "de Botkoning"
right - VN63 - BONS - Jaap Mooiweer - "Jaap van Harman van Dije"

Vollenhove - Outer-harbour

Around the Zuiderzee there were plenty of fishing villages like Vollenhove
Compare it with nowadays! - see image below

The middle of Holland nowadays
Vollenhove and many other towns lost their connection with the sea
